Habitat for Humanity Searches for Partner Family for 2021

Habitat for Humanity is recruiting applicants to become homeowners in Boone County. Family requirements include

  • Demonstrating current inadequate housing
  • Meeting income guidelines
  • Living in Boone County for a year or more
  • No current liens or outstanding judgements at the time of construction
  • Willingness to partner with the local Habitat for Humanity group to build a safe, simple, efficient home

While there is still a mortgage once the home is finished, it is typically below the standard market value. Effort from the receiving family is required while the home is built, but this effort helps reduce the final costs and helps keep mortgage costs low.  Pick up an application at 720 Story Street in Boone or online at heartofiowahabitat.org.

Huxley Communications Working to Connect Luther and Madrid

Underground construction for fiber optic Internet has been completed between Luther and Madrid. Residents along Rose Road may sign up for the service at huxcomm.net. Madrid residents are encouraged to sign up now. The sign up fee is cheaper now than it will be in the future. It’s simple to hook up the service as the network is installed in town; returning to connect users who sign up later may require an additional wait time. Fiber optic service may be available in Madrid as early as summer 2021.

Huxley Communications is coming to Madrid! A new office is being built next to the Madrid Flower Shop.

More detail is available on the huxcomm.net website.

Looking for a way to remember a loved one? Additional shelters could be funded as memorials. Contact Don Lincoln for details.

Madrid Labor Day Celebration Canceled

The Madrid Labor Day Celebration is canceled for 2020. Both the safety of residents and the costs of liability insurance were factors.  All related events are canceled except the Milers Run, which was renamed to One Moore Run and will be held virtually. Contact Phil Grothus for details.

The decision to cancel was difficult; thank you to the Labor Day Committee for all your work and dedication. We look forward to enjoying the event in 2021!

Stay tuned for next year! Two additional Labor Day Committee members are needed to help make next year’s come back awesome. Please fill out this online application to apply.
