Christmas Extravaganza Canceled – Vote for your Favorite Light Arrangement Instead

Sadly, the 2020 Christmas Extravaganza, which was to be held on Saturday, December 5, is canceled. Join us for festivities next year!

Community Lighting Contest

Take the whole family for a ride to find the best light display in town! Then vote for your favorite decorated home. This year, you get to decide contest winners; there are no judges. Voting begins on Tuesday, December 1 and is available until Tuesday, December 15. Any residence in the 50156 area code is eligible.  Stop by City State Bank (drive through or lobby) to cast your vote.

Four MACC Bucks prizes of $100, $80, $60 and $40 will be offered to the top four displays! Sponsored by Madrid Area Chamber of Commerce.

2020 General Election Details

Make your vote count! Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the 2020 General Election. Be sure to bring an approved form of identification, which will be required for all voters. Voters who are not pre-registered will also need to provide proof of residence. Madrid residents usually vote in the Madrid Community Room, but check out the Boone County Auditor website if you need more detail. The sample ballot was in the October 15 issue of the Madrid Register News, which is available at the Library and included more detail about voting locations. If you have questions, check out the election page on the Auditor’s website.

Madrid Selected for Bird Friendly Community

Madrid is the first town in Boone County to be designated as a Bird Friendly Community! Bird Friendly Iowa chose Madrid because both the City and the community are working to conserve and restore native habitat, especially at Dalander Park and along the High Trestle Trail.

Even the Madrid Public Library is involved; you can find information about bird watching, native plants that benefit birds and ways to keep birds safe linked in the Library’s online resources. Get started today, and be sure not to miss the annual Hawk Watch on the High Trestle Trail!

Bird Friendly Iowa is a project started by Trees Forever. Learn more on the Bird Friendly Iowa website.

Open Burn from Sept. 22 to Nov. 8

New Food Pantry Available in Madrid

Look for a new food pantry in front of the Madrid Public Library! Sponsored by members of the Boone County Chamber of Commerce 2020 Leadership Program, the pantry is meant to help anyone struggling with expenses. Take what you need, and leave what you can. It is open 24 hours a day. Instructions inside give donation suggestions and tips for donating items that can survive well outside.

A second pantry was placed in Ogden.
