New Food Pantry Available in Madrid

Look for a new food pantry in front of the Madrid Public Library! Sponsored by members of the Boone County Chamber of Commerce 2020 Leadership Program, the pantry is meant to help anyone struggling with expenses. Take what you need, and leave what you can. It is open 24 hours a day. Instructions inside give donation suggestions and tips for donating items that can survive well outside.

A second pantry was placed in Ogden.

Meals are being provided for students in need, the Madrid Masons are organized to shop for those at risk, and you are supporting your local businesses. Please keep it up by following the MAC Facebook page to keep track of hours and open businesses. As you would expect, the MAC Banquet has been postponed. CARES Act funds are available to pay utility bills for businesses affected by COVID-19. More information is on the Iowa Economic Development website.

IMPACT Boone County Resource Center Food Pantry is expanding hours to 10:30 am to 4:00pm Monday thru Friday. Call ahead for service.

City playgrounds equipment, shelters, and restrooms at Madrid City Parks and at Madrid Elementary School are back open starting June 6.

Snus Hill Winery events reopen with new restrictions.

Greater Love Ministries is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and the first Saturday of the month. Mask recommended. Hours are here. Call 515-795-3913 for details.

Food truck nights (temporary?) location change while parks are closed: in the parking lot of Madrid Automotive.

Main Street is one-way by the Elementary School between 11:15 am and 1:00pm daily. Travel north to south  to accommodate curb-side pick up. Be sure to use W 21st St (not Little Street) to enter Main Street, and line up single file on the left.

Madrid Public Library is offering curbside pick up. Call the Library (795-3846), and staff will check out items and put them outside. Online resources also available. The Library is beginning to increase services in June.

Congregate meals are temporarily available by delivery; call 515-432-1127 to make arrangements.

Christmas Extravaganza on December 7

The Madrid Christmas Extravaganza will be on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Like last year, this is a daytime event, which will begin with donuts and hot chocolate at City State Bank from 10 am to noon and will conclude with the Lighted Parade. To join the parade,  line up at St. John’s Lutheran Church; parade starts at 6:00 pm.

Start thinking about how your business will participate now! Choose your open hours and consider offering special gifts, food, or a drawing. MAC is offering a window decorating contest. Decorate the window of your business. The winner will receive a traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year. Share your details with Suzi Lincoln at [email protected] so MAC can help with promotion.

Mini Grant Available from Madrid Garden Club

A new mini grant program called TRELLIS is available from Madrid Garden Club with the goal to cultivate and nurture plant-related projects in Madrid. Projects involving youth are encouraged, and preference will be given to youth-centered project requests.

Examples of projects are below, but other ideas are welcome:

  • Conservation practices
  • Clean-up and beautification
  • Habitat protection
  • Best practices research
  • Demonstration gardens
  • Native plantings, pollinator gardens
  • Scholarship support

Labor Day Queen Contest Applications

Incoming Madrid freshman through seniors are invited to participate in the 2019 Labor Day Queen Contest. Applications are now available at City Hall.

Return applications to City Hall by August 16th. Presentations will be on Monday, August 21, and crowning will be part of the Saturday morning Labor Day Celebration.

The Food Trucks are Coming!

Come to Jensen Park for supper! Trucks will arrive at 5:30 pm and stay till 8:00 pm. The Madrid Parks and Recreation is arranging entertainment options so check the calendar for details. Come and support the trucks on these dates:

5/23,  6/6 , 6/13,  6/27, 7/11,  7/25, 8/8, and 8/22.

MAC Madrid City-Wide Garage Sale Map

The 2019 garage sale map is now available here! The map is available thanks to Wilcox Printing and Publishing, and the Madrid City-Wide Garage Sale is sponsored by the Madrid Area Chamber of Commerce (MAC). The 2019 sale will be held on May 4, 2019, from 8 am until 3 pm (some sales may choose to close earlier).

Spring Yard Waste Days

The Boone County Landfill Yard Waste Processing Facility will accept residential yard waste free from April 15 until May 31, 2019. This includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, brush, branches, limbs, small trees, and plant/vegetable waste (not food waste) from regular yard maintenance.

Restrictions apply when you bring a load. Hours of drop off are listed here. Call the Boone County Landfill at 433-0591 for more information about restrictions–you must meet certain standards when dropping off a load or you will need to pay a fee.

Kevin Evans 2019 Volunteer of the Year

Kevin Evans has been selected as the 2019 Volunteer of the Year and will be honored at the MAC Annual Banquet on Friday, April 5. Evans is recognized for his involvement in local youth programs:

  • helping with a pitching clinic
  • coaching t-ball
  • volunteering with the Little League Softball program
  • providing equipment to help teach softball
  • sharing plumbing knowledge to care for the Little League Concession Stand
  • teaching at baseball clinics and practices
  • supporting Madrid athletes by attending sporting events

Join us at the banquet to celebrate! Tickets may be purchased from Suzi Lincoln at City State Bank and are $25 per person. Dinner will be provided. Dr. Brett Mathes from Global Wellness Chiropractic Clinic will share a special program about health.
